Redistricting

Every ten years the State of Arkansas must go through a process known as "Redistricting". This means that the 100 seats in the House of Representatives and the 35 seats in the Senate are redrawn to conform to the shifts in population following the census. Redistricting will occur again in 2011. There are three elected officials that make the decisions in this process: The Governor, the Attorney General and the Secretary of State.

Pat O'Brien promises to make redistricting an open process. He will listen long and hard to citizens in the areas that will be affected before making any commitments on how to proceed with specific House and Senate districts. All citizens have a right to be heard in this process. Pat will make himself accessible by blogging and providing an open online forum for citizens to make their ideas and comments known. There will also be community meetings where citizens can speak face to face with decision makers.

Pat O'Brien will not engage in gerrymandering. Pat will apply a common sense geographic approach to redistricting. While it is important that districts represent distinct communities (e.g. rural areas) it is also important that citizens believe district lines are fair. Pat will follow all United States and Arkansas Supreme Court law on this point.
